全國自閉症康復教育研討會

2009年3月26日至31日

目的：

(1) 回應聯合國『世界自閉症日』，提高公眾對自閉症的認識、接納和支援；

(2) 鼓勵在社會、機構及家庭層面採取措施，提高全民對自閉症兒童的認識；

(3) 提請政府注意早期診斷、適當研究和干預等措施，有助對個人成長和發展。

美國 Ms. Brigid Rankowski

Brigid Rankowski is a strong disability advocate and someone who paints a positive image of the future of Autism. Her trip began almost ten years ago when her brother was diagnosed with Aspergers. A few years later, she realized that she had Aspergers and her life was not as normal as she had once perceived.

Growing up she was a child who would read lots of books and watch many movies. She studies the interactions of the characters and mimicked them, appearing to fit in as a regular student. For 15 years this concept worked for her without fail, until one day in March. At a music concert, she was in an accident that caused her to land head first on a concrete floor. This accident caused permanent brain damage and a loss of 15 years of memories. On the long road of recovery, Brigid fell back in love with the books of her childhood. With the help of therapies, she was able to readjust to life quickly after the accident. Less then 2 months after her accident, she was able to successfully perform in a state Drama competition. This personal strength has allowed her to graduate from high school on time and go on to college.

Brigid is working on making a name for herself as an example of a positive individual with Aspergers. She feels that the love and support she received from her mother is one of the main reasons she is who she is now. Many people look to Brigid as an example of the endless possibilities our children with Aspergers can become.

Brigid Rankowski is a current student at Cornell College in Iowa. She is currently majoring in Psychology, but has a strong interest in English and Theater. She has given presentations in various states and had presented at the National Autism Society of America conference multiple times.
